Cyberattacks on the Rise: How to Secure Your SME with SFG Funding

Cyberattacks are becoming an increasing threat, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Austria. According to the 2022 Austrian Crime Statistics, reports of cybercrime rose by a staggering 44.5% compared to the previous year, with a total of 22,376 cases. This dramatic increase underscores the urgent need to take IT security seriously.

Why IT Security Is Critical for SMEs

SMEs are often a prime target for cybercriminals. This is due to their limited resources and low awareness of cyber threats. A common misconception is that small businesses are of no interest to attackers. However, any business that stores digital data is a potential target. Ransomware, phishing, and other attacks can cause immense damage.

SFG "Cyber!Sicher" Grant: Support for SMEs

Through its “Cyber!Sicher” initiative, the Styrian Business Development Agency (SFG) offers valuable support to SMEs looking to improve their IT security. This funding program aims to raise security awareness and implement concrete measures. Among other things, it supports:

  • Cybersecurity Risk Assessments: Identifying Vulnerabilities and Threats.
  • Consulting services for optimizing IT security: Expert advice on customized security solutions.
  • Implementation of an IT security management system: Systematic protection of the IT infrastructure.
  • New investments in IT hardware and software: Enhancement of technical security measures.
  • Purchase of licenses for IT security solutions: Use of state-of-the-art software to protect sensitive data.
  • Training and certification costs: Training courses to enhance safety expertise.
  • Measures to raise security awareness: Educating employees about cyber threats.

What is not eligible for funding

  • Pure IT hardware and software investments: Investments with no direct security-related purpose.
  • Replacement investments or the replacement of existing IT infrastructure: measures that merely maintain the status quo.

SFG funding covers up to 30% of eligible project costs, up to a maximum of 15,000 euros. The minimum project budget is 5,000 euros. The application process is simple:
